Wireless or Cordless Telephones

There are many times when you need your telephone handset to be portable, rather then chained to your desk. Examples of this would include factories and warehouses, where staff who roam the premises need to be in contact.

“Wireless” can be either voice or data (as in wireless LAN). Wireless Voice is also known as “cordless”. Cordless phones allow voice to be sent between the phone handset and the base station via a radio signal. There are three basic types of cordless systems, as below:

Single Cordless
The domestic cordless is a phone which can be used in the home. Generally it consists of one handset and one base station, although some varieties, such as Uniden, allow multiple combinations. Domestic cordless phones can be added one at a time to a spare analogue extension on your telephone system. Different brands have different range capabilities, but all most rely on the coverage of a single base station, without a repeater.

The domestic cordless phone is an analogue device (even though the signals between the handset and the base may be digital). Cordless phones can be added to your system as an analogue extension via a number of methods, or as a slave to a digital phone.

Analogue integration to your phone system provides a cost effective and easy method, but is limited in some of the more advanced features.

Add-on Cordless DECT Networks
The DECT cordless system is a European standard, which allows high quality digital cordless phones to operate within their own network of cells. This is ideal for situations where a single base/handset is not enough. The Kirk Cordless system consists of a base station with multiple handsets, as well as the ability to add repeaters, to boost coverage around your site. The Kirk may be installed as an integrated package within some NEC telephone systems and configured to meet your site’s requirements. Kirk cordless are used in environments such as department stores, as well as many areas with large coverage requirements. The Kirk system will also work with travelling staff between multiple sites, using the one handset, which is logged onto whichever site they are present at.

Add-on Cordless PHS Networks
The PHS cordless system is a Japanese standard, which allows high quality digital cordless phones to operate within their own network of cells. This is ideal for situations where a single base/handset is not enough. This system also consists of a base station with multiple handsets, as well as the ability to add repeaters, to boost coverage around your site. PHS may be installed as an integrated package within some NEC telephone systems and configured to meet your site’s requirements.

Note: PHS has been discontinued within the NEC range and we cannot supply this system, or any parts as new. It may be possible to reconfigure existing systems and provide some maintenance, for customers who are already using the equipment, whilst parts can still be sourced, but we cannot guarantee service at any level, as this product is no longer supported by NEC.
